Ebook About Once the golden boy of the English literary scene, now a clinically depressed writer of pulp crime fiction, Ash Winters has given up on hope, happiness, and—most of all—himself. He lives his life between the cycles of his illness, haunted by the ghosts of other people's expectations. Then a chance encounter throws him into the path of Essex boy Darian Taylor. By his own admission, Darian isn't the crispest lettuce in the fridge, but he makes Ash laugh, reminding him of what it's like to step beyond the boundaries of anxiety. But Ash has been living in his own shadow for so long that he can't see past the glitter to the light. Can a man who doesn't trust himself ever trust in happiness? And how can a man who doesn't believe in happiness ever fight for his own?Book Glitterland (Spires Book 1) Review :
Why isn't Alexis Hall famous across the lands? He's a freaking brilliant writer with an amazing ear for both dialogue and dialect whose writing is funny and smart and sharp and emotionally complex, and always, always original in ways you simply don't anticipate.I am not a great fan of the difficult, prickly asshole-hero. I think Lizzie Bennett was right all along about Darcy, the great git, until she wasn't. Ash is sunk so deeply into the blackest, deepest depression that he is miserable to all, and the only way I can stand to read about him is because he's so damn funny and scathing about it. He's heartbreakingly damaged, but he's hard to like. His response to the outrageous, charming, oddly innocent glitterball of love who comes crashing into his black existence is just brilliantly chronicled - his stunned awe, his resentment and fear, his tiny stunted heart slowly coming to life.I can't say enough good things about this book to begin with. BUT THEN. There's Nicholas Boulton's performance of it. Truly, this is the best audio performance I've ever heard, and I am a huge fan of audiobooks and a major (and fussy) consumer of them. I'd have missed a lot of the humor and charm, and a lot of the dynamic between Ash and Darian, if I'd read this rather than listened to it. I'm from the US and the Essex boy accent and attitude wouldn't have meant anything to me on the page. Even if I was familiar (I'm imagining a setting where I do know how that fabulous voice would sound), it would not have been nearly as much fun as Boulton makes it.I cannot over-recommend this. Simply perfect. I had initially been intending to rate this four stories. Enjoyable, standout, but five stars? I'll tell you why.Main characters:Ash: I thought he was depressing and that was the case. It annoyed me until I remembered I'd gone through many of the same things as he had, had a lot of similar experiences. The thing about that is it showed he was a well written, a fully fleshed person, hurting all of the time, wanting to be better and not knowing how to make it happen, to turning inward and doing his damnedest to push people away. Totally normal when depressed. The story is told through his eyes.Darian: He seems superficial at first but there's so much more to him. He's the guy who wears his heart on his sleeves. When he's happy it's obvious. When you make little jabs at him, especially ones his doesn't fully understand, there's a bit of hurt. When you're terrible to him? Boy, is it obvious. When he loves you? Crazy obvious. He's not that smart, while Ash is very smart, but he is the most open and caring person in this entire book. If you don't like him you're a soulless automaton. Seriously. The rest are there to help flesh out the mains. Niall, Amy, Max, Chloe and even Nan. We hardly see Nan but her presence is known by the kind of man Darian has become, as well as her being constantly referenced. Of the friends, Chloe is the truest of them all. We learn more about Darian through her and so why Nan is so important to him.Major reason for the five stars? The way this made me feel. Took a minute to snag my interest but once it did there was no turning back. I ran the entire gamut of emotions. Variously, I felt happy, sad, anxious and hopeful. It made me laugh at some of the silly things Ash and Darian said to one another. I was also unsure how it would end. There were a few things that happened making me think it could turn out different than expected. Worth the read to find out.
