I've really liked Stacy Reid's books in he past, and this one was well-written and the basis for the hero and heroine's love was well done. After reading it, however, I kind of wish I hadn't spent $3.99 to buy it, but had waited to check it out of the library or rent it someplace.Apologies for minor spoilers ahead, but things I wish I had known before purchasing.Two things really ruined it for me. I liked the hero at the beginning, but by the end his revenge plot had gotten to be too much. He only considered opening up his mind to forgiveness briefly, the second to last chapter, and even then, it was really only forgiveness for the heroine's sake, not his own. Sure, the crime that he was revenging was heinous, but the character didn't really change and by the end, I felt more pity for the last man on his list than I did for him. Actually, now that I think about it, along the way I felt pity for several of the men on his list. Why was that? (I suppose that could be me and my personality, but some of it has to be the unforgiving attitude of the hero and what he was willing to do to those who wronged him.)I was also bothered by the heroine. Her man breaks a man's arm intentionally and heartlessly. Sure, he had hurt the heroine, but shouldn't the hero be better than the "bad guys"? Her reaction---to say thank you. When the hero threatens the mother, sisters, and mistress of someone on his list (innocent people, by the way) she says 'I love you'. She cared when the hero was coming after someone she cared about, but not when it was someone else? So, once again, I liked her in the beginning, but by the end I didn't.Maybe you will appreciate these characters more that I did, but I was definitely bothered by how easily violence came to the hero and how accepting, even approving, of it the heroine was. No one actually died in the book, but not necessarily for lack of trying on the part of the hero. It felt that the hero (and the heroine since she supported him) was lowering himself to the level of the men on his list. And when it counted, the two main characters seemed unforgiving and unchanging, and way too comfortable with violence to revenge violence. Another intensely hot and extremely sensual romance by Stacy Reid. When Maryann meets Nicolas in the middle of a ball, she's seeking justice against the cruelest debutant in London.
